What Is a Float Switch?

A float switch is a water-level control that starts or stops equipment as a float rises or falls. In a sump pump system, the switch senses water in the pit and signals the pump to remove it. The switch may hang from a cord or move along a fixed rod.

Key Takeaways About Float Switch

  • A moving float responds to changing water levels.
  • The switch helps control automatic sump pump operation.
  • A float switch isn't the same as a pressure switch.

How Float Switch Works

A float switch uses a buoyant float to sense water level. As water rises in a sump pit, the float moves and closes an electrical circuit. That signal starts the sump pump. As the pit empties, the float drops and opens the circuit.

Some switches hang beside the pump on a flexible cord. Others move along a guide or sit inside the pump body. The float needs clear movement, so a crowded pit, tangled cord, or debris can stop the switch from working correctly.

A technician checks the float's movement, wiring, and pump response. The test shows whether the switch sends the signal and whether the pump acts on it.

Expert Note

When we inspect a sump pump, we check whether the float moves freely through its working range. We also inspect the cord, switch connection, and pump response. A float that catches on the pit wall can cause poor operation even when the pump motor still works.

Float Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A sump pump pit fills during heavy rain, but the pump stays off because its float is caught against the discharge pipe. We clear the obstruction and test the float so the pump responds as the water level changes.
