What Is a Wax Ring?

A Wax Ring is a soft sealing gasket that fits between a toilet and the drain flange. It closes the joint around the toilet outlet, helping keep wastewater and sewer gases inside the drain system. The ring compresses when the toilet rests on it, creating a watertight seal without threaded connections or glue.

Key Takeaways About Wax Ring

  • It forms a soft seal without glue or threads.
  • The toilet compresses the ring against the drain flange.
  • A wax ring is not the same as a toilet flange.

How Wax Ring Works

A Wax Ring sits between the bottom of a toilet and the toilet flange. The flange connects the toilet drain opening to the waste pipe and supports the toilet bolts. When the toilet rests in place, its weight presses the wax against both surfaces.

The compressed wax fills small gaps around the toilet outlet. This creates a seal that helps stop leaks and sewer odors. A toilet installation usually includes removing the old ring, checking the flange, placing a new ring, and setting the toilet straight. The bolts hold the toilet down while the seal stays compressed.

Wax does not harden like glue, so the toilet must sit firmly after installation. Movement can disturb the seal and allow moisture to escape. A ring may have a plastic guide that helps center the drain opening, but the guide does not replace the flange.

Expert Note

When we install a toilet, we inspect the flange and the underside of the toilet before placing a new ring. We set the toilet evenly, tighten the bolts in stages, and check for movement after the connection is assembled. We also look for signs that the flange needs repair before sealing the joint.

Wax Ring in Practice: A Real-World Example

During a toilet installation in a Kent home, the old toilet is removed and the exposed flange is checked for damage. A new wax ring is placed on the connection, then the toilet is set and secured so the seal stays compressed.
