What Is Root Intrusion?

Root Intrusion is a sewer pipe problem in which tree or shrub roots enter through cracks, loose joints, or small openings. Inside the line, roots grow and form a tangled mass that catches waste and slows flow. The blockage can lead to backups, leaks, or pipe damage if the opening remains untreated.

Key Takeaways About Root Intrusion

  • Roots enter through cracks, joints, or other pipe openings.
  • The root mass can trap waste and restrict sewer flow.
  • Root intrusion is not the same as a simple drain clog.

How Root Intrusion Works

Root intrusion begins when roots find moisture near a sewer pipe. Roots can enter through a cracked section, a loose joint, or a failed seal. The opening may be small, but growing roots can spread inside the pipe.

Inside the line, roots catch paper, grease, and other waste. The buildup narrows the passage and can slow or stop flow. A sewer camera helps show the root mass and the condition of the pipe around it. A plumber may clear the blockage, then check whether the pipe needs repair.

Root intrusion often returns if the opening stays in place. Sewer line repair addresses the damaged section so the line can carry wastewater properly.

Expert Note

When we inspect suspected root intrusion, we check the sewer line with a camera and look for both roots and pipe damage. We then match the repair approach to the opening, joint failure, or damaged section that allowed roots inside.

Root Intrusion in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner notices slow drains and repeated sewer backups. A camera inspection shows roots entering through a cracked section of the sewer line, so sewer line repair focuses on that damaged area.
