What Is a P-Trap?

A P-Trap is a curved drain fitting that holds a small amount of water beneath a sink, tub, shower, or other fixture. The water blocks sewer gases from entering the room. The trap also provides a reachable section of pipe where debris may collect and where drain cleaning work can begin.

Key Takeaways About P-Trap

  • Its curved shape holds water after the fixture drains.
  • A blocked trap can slow drainage and cause odors.
  • A P-Trap is not the same as a drain auger.

How P-Trap Works

A P-Trap holds water in its curved section after a fixture drains. That water forms a barrier between the room and the drainpipe. Sewer gases cannot pass through the water under normal conditions.

Water and waste move through the trap when you use the fixture. Hair, grease, soap, and small objects may collect inside the curve. A plumber may remove the trap or use its access point during drain cleaning. The trap connects to the fixture drain and the larger drain line.

How We Use It During Drain Cleaning

We check the trap when a sink drains slowly or smells bad. We look for buildup, leaks, loose connections, and items lodged inside. Cleaning the trap may clear a local blockage, but a deeper clog needs attention farther along the drain.

Expert Note

When we inspect a P-Trap, we check both water flow and the condition of its connections. During drain cleaning, we may clear debris from the trap before checking the nearby drain line. We also look for leaks that could damage the cabinet or surrounding floor.

P-Trap in Practice: A Real-World Example

A kitchen sink drains slowly, and water backs up in the cabinet trap. During drain cleaning, we inspect the P-Trap for grease or food debris before checking the rest of the drain.
