What Is an Anode Rod?

Anode Rod is a metal component inside a tank water heater that helps protect the steel tank from corrosion. The rod attracts corrosive elements in the water, so the rod wears away before the tank does. A plumber checks its condition during water heater repair and replaces it when the remaining material is too thin.

Key Takeaways About Anode Rod

  • The rod wears away before the steel tank.
  • A worn rod can leave the tank less protected.
  • Anode rods are not heating elements.

How Anode Rod Works

Anode Rod works through a process called sacrificial protection. The rod reacts with corrosive elements in the tank water. As the rod is consumed, the steel tank receives protection from those reactions.

A plumber checks the rod through the service opening at the top of the water heater. The inspection looks at the rod's remaining material and surface condition. A replacement rod must match the heater's design and fit the available space.

An anode rod does not heat water, control temperature, or remove sediment. Those jobs belong to the heating elements, thermostat, and tank cleaning process. A worn rod may need replacement during water heater repair to help protect the tank.

Expert Note

When we inspect a tank water heater, we check the anode rod along with visible connections and tank condition. We look for heavy wear, then confirm that a replacement rod fits the heater before installing it. This check helps us separate rod wear from problems caused by the heating system.
